DEVELOPMENT

Safeway continues to insist that it will move forward with  its intention to redevelop its Tenleytown store at Davenport and 42nd Street, NW.  Revised proposals to the community are currently being developed.  Further information about Safeway’s proposal is available on the company’s website.

Douglas Development Company (Doug Jemal) is moving forward with redevelopment of the old Babe’s Billiard Building at Wisconsin and Albemarle.  The building is no longer envisioned as solely a commercial building, but will include both commercial/retail on the first three floors, and rental units on the top two floors.

The firm of Shalom Baranes has been brought in to design the work (the same folks who did the Cityline building) The architect is Patrick Burkhart.

The current plan is to keep the same footprint with the addition being built above what already exists. This would speed construction by avoiding the need for demolition and excavation and would allow for the new larger building to be completed in approximately two years. No parking is planned for the building.  ANC Commissioners and Jemal agree that the building will have a stipulation that no residential parking permits will be available to tenants.  A request for a new PUD is anticipated.
